Legendary Mordialloc boat builder, the late Jack Pompei OAM’s boatyard, will take on a completely new guise with a mixture of residential and commercial development likely following its purchase by a local developer.

According to Teska Carson Directors, George Takis and Michael Taylor, who brokered the deal, the 557-561 Main Street (Nepean Highway) property which was held by the Pompei family for 80 years, sold for $2.85 million on a healthy square metre rate of $3042 reflecting the Mixed Use zoned site’s strong commercial and residential potential.

``The property presented a prime site in a brilliant location with excellent exposure, frontage and development access, in the heart of a well-established and popular suburban retail and commercial precinct, with a very low vacancy rate

``Obviously that sort of opportunity, with the additional benefit of very flexible zoning, does not present very often and there were, predictably, no shortage of suitors,’’ Mr Takis said.

The 937 square metre site boasts a 57 metre frontage to Main Street and includes an 850 square metre, older-style, brick warehouse - the home of Pompei’s Marine since the 1940’s.

Mr Pompei, aka Mr Mordialloc, was awarded an OAM in 1987 for his work in marine search and rescue on Port Phillip Bay where it is estimated he rescued more than 600 people.

The bridge over Mordialloc Creek was renamed Pompei Bridge in 2009 in his honor while Mr Pompei’s boats were known Australia wide for quality workmanship.
